Tongariro Alpine Crossing Premium Guided Hike
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing Premium Guided Hike is my pick of the best Tongariro Crossing tours for both experienced hikers and beginners alike. This tour offers a full day of exploration and adventure on Mt Tongariro.
Adrift Tongariro have been operating in the Tongariro National Park for many years and pride themselves on their ability to offer bespoke and tailored tours to suit the fitness and experience levels of their customers.
The Premium Guided Hike tour includes transport from the Adrift Tongariro base in National Park to and from the start and end of the hike. With summer being the busiest time of year on the Tongariro Crossing, this tour is designed to take hikers away from the busiest sections across alternate routes which are less populated for a heightened and more natural experience.
The tour provides one of the best available experiences on the Tongariro Crossing, exposing you to the bewildering beauty of the emerald lakes, past mountain springs, the towering basalt cone of Mt Ngauruhoe then on past Red Crater to Blue Lake and beyond with your own private guide.
Specialist clothing, footwear and equipment is available for hire including boots and backpacks. Before starting the hike, a full safety briefing and gear check is conducted to ensure all members of the group are properly prepared. A minimum of two people are required for a booking, but if you’re a solo traveller you’re advised to book anyway as tours are so popular you can usually piggyback on.
For convenience, return transport from Taupo CBD, Turangi, Whakapapa Village and Ohakune is available by shuttle for an additional surcharge (summer months only). And if you don’t want to sort it yourself, lunch can also be ordered and paid for at the time of booking.

important note – Tongariro Crossing Bookings
In October 2023 a booking system was introduced for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing to monitor visitor numbers. It is now recommended that all Tongariro Crossing hikers make a booking via the online system before embarking on their walk.
If you are taking a guided tour of the Crossing, having an online booking is a requirement. Your tour company may sort your booking for you, or you may need to make the booking yourself and provide proof of confirmation before your trip.
I recommend checking with your tour provider well in advance.
BONUS EXPERIENCE — Looking for More of A Challenge?
Mt Ruapehu Crater Lake Guided Hike
For those looking for a more adventurous and challenging hike, the Mount Ruapehu Crater Lake Guided Hike is for you. Mt Ruapehu is the highest of the three volcanoes of the Tongariro National Park at 2797m and the highest peak in the North Island, making it a perfect spot from which to enjoy panoramic views.
This expedition style adventure is more technical than the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, so a good level of fitness is needed. The route is not marked, so hikers must be comfortable hiking on steep and uneven terrain. Mt Ruapehu has a pretty solid snow cap all year round, so you’re likely to encounter snow on this trek. But don’t worry – experienced guides will accompany you every step of the way, providing helpful instructions and safety advice along the way. Crampons and ice axe are provided where required.
This fantastic alpine experience begins at the Whakapapa skifield carpark at the top of the Bruce Road. In good weather, hikers may be able to travel part-way up the mountain by chairlift (for a small extra fee). In bad weather, chairlifts may not operate and so this section must be walked also – a great way to warm up your body before the adventure truly begins!
It will take approximately 8 hours of walking past volcanic ridges and mini-glaciers on the mountain before reaching the Crater Lake. Once there, take in stunning and truly panoramic views of the entire Central Plateau region including Lake Taupo, Mt Tauhara and Mt Taranaki before enjoying your pre-arranged picnic lunch!
Cost: NZD $333.34 pp
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Tour Type: Small Group / Professional Guides
Tour Length: Approx. 8 hours
Tour Starts: 8.00am
Return Time: 5.30pm
Departure Location: Adrift Tongariro Base, 53 Carroll Street, National Park Village

➤ STILL NOT SURE? Find Out Why You Need A Guided Tongariro Crossing Walk in This Post
Gear to take with you on your guided Tongariro Crossing tour
Before you set off on your guided walk of this fascinating landscape, it’s important that you come prepared with the right supplies to ensure both your safety and comfort.
Here’s what to bring on your guided Tongariro Crossing tour:
Water
The key for any outdoor activity is to stay hydrated but particularly in exposed alpine environments such as this. There’s no drinkable water along the way so be sure to bring at least 1-2 litres of water per person.
Personal Medication
It’s essential to take any personal medications, such as an asthma inhaler or blister protection with you during the hike.
Sun Protection
The New Zealand environment can be quite harsh on skin. The lack of ozone layer means UV rays are much harsher (especially at such high elevations). Make sure to bring plenty of sun protection. Pack a good sun hat which covers your neck and ears. Don’t forget your sunglasses (preferably polarizing) as well as long layers and minimum SPF30+ sunscreen.
Backpack
A comfortable and robust backpack is essential for carrying your supplies during any guided Tongariro Crossing tour. Be sure to choose one that is at least 25L, fits comfortably and is relatively robust. You may also want to use a bin bag as a pack liner to help keep the gear inside your pack dry.
Hiking Boots/Shoes
Choose a pair of shoes with good grip, shock absorption, and breathability. Hiking boots or shoes with deep lugs and ankle support are ideal for the Tongariro Crossing’s rocky and steep terrain. You can hire boots from most guiding companies if needed (although I recommend this only as a last resort because unfamiliar shoes can lead to blisters).
Clothing
Choose light layers that you can add or remove depending on weather conditions. A good layering system includes a light top (e.g. t-shirt), at least 2 warm top layers (e.g. long shirts, hoodies, fleece or soft shell) and a full set of thermal layers. A waterproof raincoat is also non-negotiable regardless of whether rain is forecast. A warm hat and gloves are also good additions.
With the right gear and equipment, you’ll be able to make the most of your guided Tongariro Crossing walk in safety and comfort.
